It's finally here! It's finally here!!! I'm feeling like a kid on Christmas Eve...and for those of you who know me, that's a huge deal because you know I love, love, LOVE Christmas! The 'it' I'm referring to, is Summer. And I'm so happy because though I love Winter, I also love my seasons and Summer has been hiding... here we are mid June and thankfully the weather (which has felt a bit more like winter) has finally decided to warm up and warm us up with it. That means time for some outdoor living. Yay for us!!! Time for backyard brunches, afternoon naps on the sofa or swing and wine n smores over the fire pit in the evening. Time to enjoy the fruits of your gardening labors and live it up in your garden oasis. Here's just 6 tips to make your outdoor living the best it can be:
Tip #1
Treat your outdoor space like your indoor space as it's an extension of your home. Make sure to create cozy, inviting areas for your functional needs with textile accents like layered outdoor pillows, candleholders, outdoor statuary (vintage Buddhas are perfect;)) and consider vintage architectural elements like old garden gates or stone corbels.
Tip #2
Crown your space with a market umbrella or two for shade. It's a great way to define and top off your space. And don't forget the many available options out there beyond traditional round. There's solid canvas like florals, square umbrellas, carnival edge umbrellas and my personal favorite, Bali umbrellas.
Tip #3
Frame your space with potted plants. Seating areas can have groupings tiered in different sized pots beside sofa ends, between chair pairs or atop side and coffee tables. Dining spaces can have potted centerpieces of a matching pair (best on a long table) or try a tiered grouping or single large bowl for a round table. Remember to keep your plants in similar themes...in other words if you choose succulents, fill all your pot groupings with succulents. If you choose perennials for color pops, filling all your pots with perennials will keep things easy on the eye and help create consistency in your outdoor space.
Tip #4
If your outdoor space is limited and don't have enough room for multiple functions like dining and relaxing, don't force it, but rather choose the function you'll use most and create a beautiful, welcoming and comfortable space
Tip #5
Integrate the old and the new together. In my professional opinion, the best spaces include both old and new elements, which is a great way to make your space your own. It certainly avoids the "big box retail store" look which you may have seen in your neighbor's or friend's yard. Remember your space is a reflection of you, your unique style and taste, certainly not a store or someone else.
Tip #6
Add evening ambiance with some fun (and functional) lighting. Just like your indoor spaces, evening lighting adds that perfect touch to set the mood for whatever your heart desires. Strung carnival lights or twinkle lights glowing in trees are always festive and happy and create a sense of whimsy. Battery operated LED strands allow you to light spots previously unthinkable like wreaths and table top displays. The classic outdoor spot lighting of your plants, trees, etc beautifully show off your entire yard at night. And nothing compares to a fire pit surrounded by cozy seating as it lights up the night and brings some warmth and just the right flame temp for some hot dogs or smores.
Whatever the feel of your outdoor space, from Organic Zen to Cottage Garden to Lush Tropical, make it the absolute best it can be. Expanding your living space from the indoors, out is only a good thing for our design well being ;)
